The PEASE family is, as so many are in the Quaker world, quite extensive. They were prominent Quakers, bankers, investors in the railways and even involved as anti-abolitionists.

Margaret Valentine PEASE, know as ‘Val’, was David’s grandmother, but she died when David was quite young, so he has few memories of her. But it is nice to know she was well-educated, studying at the Slade School of Art in University College London, where she met her husband, John Arthur DODGSON.

Val PEASE is the 14th generation of PEASEs covered briefly on this page and more detail will be added in due course.

To the right is an ‘hourglass’ tree starting at the top with Thomas PEASE, who is the fourth generation from our starting point of John PEASE, and he would be Val’s 8x gt grandfather. John PEASE, who is the earliest we know of currently, would be her 11x gt grandfather,

Although they are alleged to emanate from Essex, most of the early PEASE history centers on Fishlake, near to Doncaster, then onto Felkirk and by the 1700s onto Darlington.

Below are brief details about Val’s 13 generations of direct ascent on the PEASE side itself.

Edward PEASE (1711-1785) and Elizabeth COATES (1715-1783) descendents include two grandsons [sons of Joseph (1737- 1808)]: Edward PEASE (1767-1858) and Joseph PEASE (1772- 1846). Edward was known as the ‘father of the railways” and Joseph was a great anti-slavery campaigner . They are considered in more detail on PEASE, Edward.
