PEASE lines down from Edward PEASE & Elizabeth COATES

Trying to understand the various lines of PEASE relations and interrelations is complicated. The tree below has several children missed out to simplify. Edward PEASE and Elizabeth COATES actually had nine children, two of whom are described below- Ann and Joseph - the others are discussed after the tree diagram.

  • Ann PEASE (1745-1826) married Jonathan BACKHOUSE, from another banking family, and then lines further down include HODGKIN, JOWITT, GURNEY and CHAPMAN.

  • Joseph PEASE (1737-1808) married Mary RICHARDSON and they had five children, [four who lived in to adulthood] and for simplicity here only two children are included - Edward (1767-1858) and Joseph 1772-1846).

Joseph PEASE (1772-1846) in 1801 in London married Elizabeth BEAUMONT, daughter of a London chemist, John BEAUMONT, and this was probably a marriage brokered at FMH in London. So far, we know of only two children: John Beaumont and Elizabeth, and it is John Beaumont’s second sonJohn William PEASE who was a founder of HODGKIN, BARNET, PEASE AND SPENCE , a bank which was merged into LLOYDS in 1903. Note that Sarah LLOYD , John William PEASE’s mother in law was descended from Sampson LLOYD who founded LLOYD and TAYLOR bank. So not so much a hostile takeover but a family merger!

The older child of Joseph PEASE and Mary RICHARDSON was Edward PEASE- the “Father of the Railways” who in 1821 bankrolled George Stephenson and mention of Edward can be found in most biographical information about George Stephenson- even wikipedia. Edward PEASE and Rachel WHITWELL had eight children of whom three are shown- the others who married did so into families such as FRY and GIBSON. Of their four children, we can say a few things here [for more information contact me]:

The three children of Edward PEASE and RACHEL WHITWELL featured in the tree below:

- John PEASE married Sophia JOWITT- the intertwining of families continues as their daughter Mary Anna PEASE married her 2nd cousin Jonathan Backhouse HODGKIN.

- Henry PEASE married his second wife Mary LLOYD [sister of Sarah LLOYD as above] whose grandparents were Samuel LLOYD and Rachel BRAITHWAITE. So another intermarriage.

- Joseph PEASE married Emma GURNEY- the GURNEYS were also married into BACKHOUSE and BARCLAY- and Joseph and Emma had 12 children, seven of whom are listed in the tree. One daughter Rachel married as her second husband William FOWLER of another banking family. Interstingly for our family, Sir Joseph Whitwell PEASE married Mary FOX [known in the family as Minnie] who was the sister of Helen Maria FOX who married John William PEASE- so these two 2nd cousins were now also brothers-in-law. The FOX family of Falmouth had many children, so we can think that the marriages to their spouses in Darlington were brokered at FMH in London.
