DODGSON
The DODGSONs seem originally to come from Yorkshire, fairly near to the Lancashire border. The nearest places to find would be Gisburn and more locally to where many of the family originally came from, Paythorne, so named [allegedly] that workers were paid by the person standing under the tree, which looks to be outside of a pub. There is also a “Dodgson’s Ghyll” nearby to Paythorne itself.
For those who are interested, we know that the family tree can also descend down to Charles Lutwidge DODGSON, a k a Lewis Carroll, down through what in the family is referred to as the ‘Hassard-Hume’ line. Whilst there seem to be a lot of burials listed in the records for DODGSON at Gisburn, a vist there by ourselves showed a few gravestones three deep around the edge of a large expanse of green, so nothing much to see, sadly.
The descendents from Robert through this side of the family to William Oliver DODGSON are shown in the six-generation ‘hourglass’ tree below. We continue directly after that: William Oliver DODGSON married Lucy Elizabeth SMITH in 1849 and they had eight children: William Henly DODGSON, Charles Healthfield DODGSON, Edward Spencer DODGSON, Captain Arthur DODGSON, Henley Frederick DODGSON, Ellen Elizabeth DODGSON, Major Heathfield Butler DODGSON [“Toat”] and Campbell DODGSON. “Toat” was David’s great grandfather. Note that Susanna DODGSON in the USA who has a large DODGSON website, is descended from Charles Heathfield DODGSON.

There have been attempts to go back hundreds of years, certainly to Robert DODGSON [1613-1676] who died at Paythorne. In places I will refer to him as ROBERT 1 as there is a whole line of Roberts. All I have found about this ROBERT 1 is as follows, taken from a Dodgson family tree online- I havent verified it myself yet:
In his will, he leaves land that he bought from Henry Hewitt and Richard Trotter plus £40 to his son Robert. To granddaughters Margaret and Ellen, daughters of Christopher Dodgson he gives 50/- per year. He gives the same amount to George and Ellen Wilkinson children of William Wilkinson of Horton Hall his grandchildren. He gives £20 between Ann, Ellen, Alice and Margaret Wilkinson daughters of Wm Wilkinson his granddaughters. Dau Elizabeth wife or Richard Brown gets £7. Son John Dodgson gets all his husbandry gear. Ellen his wife gets all the rest after debts are paid, she is also the executor.
