I will start as far back as I know about the HAYWARDs themselves. They all were from Little Lever and earlier in Tottington.

He married Betty NUTTALL on 5th Jan 1805 at St Mary, Bury. He was a groom, a husbandman and then a banksman at Bradshaw Hall. So far, I have found six children, all baptised at St Mary, Bury: Ann born Dec 5 1805; John born Oct 31 bap Dec 1807; Thomas b Feb 1813 died March 3rd aged 1mo; Richard born Feb 15 bap Mar 20 1814; Elizabeth bap Jul 7 1816 and Mary bap April 1820.
John HAYWARD (1807-1849)
He married Sarah HASLAM (1811-1849) on 21 Nov 1832 at St Peter, Bolton. John was a coal agent living at Fairfield, Bolton- now mostly under a dual carriageway called St Peters Way. They both died within a few months of each other, she probably in childbirth and he probably of TB or Cholera. The child Sarah born in 1849 died then too and all three are buried together. There were 8 children in all: Betsy [Elizabeth] b 1834; Richard b 1835; Jane b 1837; Mary b 1839; Ellen b 1840, Jenett b 1843; John b 1845 d 1845; Sarah b 1849 died 1849.
Richard HAYWARD (1835-1909)
Richard went to live with his sister Jane with friends and relatives after his parents died, working as a clerk at the colliery. He married Hannah ENTWISTLE on March 8th 1858 at the Parish Church, Walmsley. They had only one child, John (1860- 1939). Richard became colliery manager at Ladyshore, played the organ at the Methodist chapel in Little Lever and was well-known locally.
John HAYWARD (1860-1939)
He rose to become colliery manager after his father. He married Lizzie THORNLEY on Dec 2nd 1882 at St Matthew, Little Lever. They had six children:

Richard HAYWARD (1883- 1967)
He married Annie TURNER on 12 April 1909 at St Matthew, Little Lever. They had one child, Joans father- John HAYWARD (1910-1994).
John HAYWARD (1910-1994)
John HAYWARD was an only child. He attended St Matthews church in Little Lever and sung in the choir and went to the primary school there. He attended Bury Grammar School and after leaving school went to work for Hick Hargreaves as an apprentice engineer. In 1937 he was working for Anglo-Iranian Oil when war broke out, working on pipelines in Abadan in an ‘exempted’ occupation; he even owned half of a power boat (‘Anatis) on the Shatt-al-Arab river. However when General Wavell came to Anglo-Iranian calling for engineers to enlist, then when John was next travelling, he enlisted in Cairo, intially joining the first part of the forces that he came to- being RAOC- as a lieutenant; RAOC later became REME.
Initially he was in North Africa, then was moved to Greece to slow down the progressing German forces. He was captured in Crete, along with 17000 others, including many Greeks, Australians and New Zealanders. After several moves through Greece then into Northern Germany, he was then moved [following complaints about Oflag VI-B] to Eichstatt in the South, Oflag-VIIB; he remained there until the end of the war when they were marched from the camp and US planes strafed them, killing a few and injuring John, so in fact he was in a German Military Hospital at the very end, when he was taken to a hospital in England. John ran a dance band when in Abadan, and indeed did so in Oflag-VIIB where the two bands were allowed to help keep up morale.
After the War John met May at the Palais de Dance in Bolton and they married on 1st June 1946 at St Peter’s, Halliwell. Finding a job at the age of 36 wasn’t easy: John firstly worked in Camberwell, South London, where both Joan and her brother were born, then in 1949 the family moved to Gosforth, just north of Newcastle. John worked for Northumberland County Council [his office was in Newcastle] as an engineer until his retirement in 1975. Then he and May moved to Bishop Monkton, between Ripon and Harrogate, so John could sail his cabin cruiser on the canal system. They travelled all over England for weeks at a time, attending rallies and so on.
In 1994 John was diagnosed with prostate cancer; in July he was moved up to Cullercoats to be near to the children and sadly he died on 15th August.
